영어 소설 The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho,연금술사)

 

 

 

   파울로 코엘료는 이 책 <<연금술사>>로 인해 "가장 많은 언어로 번역된 작가"로 기네스북에 기록되기도 했다. 16년 전 우리나라에서도 '올해의 베스트셀러'로 선정되어 그 해 당시 한국인 10명 중 1명은 이 책을 읽었다고 하니 지금까지 이 책을 읽은 사람들의 수가 얼마나 많을까? 짐작조차 어렵다.

 

아마도 '연금술사' 속 수많은 명언들 중에서 우리에게 가장 잘 알려진 문장은 바로 " When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.(당신이 무언가를 간절히 원할 때 온 우주는 당신의 소망이 실현되도록 도와준다) " 일 것이다. 어디선가 많이 들어 본 문장인데 이 문장의 출처가 '연금술사'라는 걸 모르는 사람도 많을 것 같다.

 

'연금술사'는 '산티아고'라는 이름을 가진 양치기가 자신이 진정 원하는 것을 찾기 위해 세상을 여행하는 과정을 담고 있다. 결국 그 보물은 자신이 처음 출발하던 그곳에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있었지만, 그것을 얻기 위해서는 반드시 길을 떠나야 했고 멀고 힘든 여정에서 꿈을 포기하지 않았기에 가능했던 일이었다.

 

작가는 이 책을 통해 자신의 삶에서 일어나는 좋은 일들을 깨닫지 못하는 사람들에게는 하루하루가 매일 똑같은 일이라는 것을 그리고 비밀은 바로 지금 '현재'에 있다는 것을 강조한다.

꿈을 이루지 못하게 만드는 것은 오직 하나, 실패할지도 모른다는 두려움 때문이다. 도전앞에서 주저하고 실패해 본 사람들은 누구나 이 문장이 얼마나 정확한지 알고 있다.

 

다음은 책을 읽으면서 내게 명언처럼 다가왔던 문장들을 옮겨 보았다.

It's through action.

 

Every search begins with beginner's luck. And every search ends with the victor's being severely tested. It said that the darkest hour of the night came just before the dawn.

 

That's what alchemists do.

They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.
