영어 원서 Rich Dad, Poor Dad (부자아빠 가난한 아빠,Robert T. Kiyosaki)

 

 

경제경영서로 정말 유명한 이 책을, 사실 존재조차 전혀 몰랐다가 이 책이 출간되고 오히려 약 20년이 지나고서야 그 존재를 알게 되었으니 이 나이에 내가 얼마나 재테크나 경제에 무지한 사람이었는지 여실히 드러난다.

 

로버트 기요사키는 일본계 미국인으로 하와이에서 나고 자랐다. 이 책에서는 학력은 높았지만 평생 부채에 시달리다 빚을 남기고 돌아가신 자신의 아버지를 가난한 아빠로, 학력은 낮지만 돈의 원리를 깨달아 엄청난 부를 이룬, 어린 자신과 친구에게 경제원리를 가르쳐 준 친구 아버지는 부자아빠라 호칭한다. 그러한 연유로 책의 제목이 <부자아빠 가난한 아빠>가 되었다지만 지극히 자극적이긴 하다.

책의 전반부에서는 자신이 어릴 때부터 부자아빠로부터 배운 돈에 대한 원리들을 풀어나가고 후반부에서는 자신이 구체적으로 어떻게 부를 이루었는지 경험을 나누고 독자로 하여금 돈의 원리를 깨닫도록 유도한다. 

 

로버트 기요사키는 막대한 부를 이룬 자산가이면서 동시에 지금까지 이 책 이외에도 부자아빠 시리즈의 여러 다른 책들을 포함 해 400여 권이나 책을 출간 한 작가이고 투자 교육가이다. 좀 더 자료를 찾아보니 47세에 은퇴를 하고 50세가 되던 해에 이 책을 출간했다. 2006년 도널드 트럼프와 함께 <기요사키와 트럼프의 부자>라는 제목으로 책을 출간해 화제를 일으키기도 했다. 그러나 2012년 파산 신청으로 잠시 '파산한 아빠'라는 별명이 붙기도 했지만 파산은 단순히 본인 기업을 위한 trick이라는 루머가 있었고 실제적으로 파산 당시에도 900억 가까운 재산이 있었다고 한다. 현재 그는 70대 중반으로, 최근에도 책을 출간하고 자신이 그동안 이룬 부를 누리며 트위터로 투자 충고를 날리는 건재함을 과시하고 있다. 

 

처음에는 이 책을 번역본으로 읽었지만 최근에 다시 읽을 때는 원서로 읽으며 정리해 보았다. 언뜻 보면 다 아는 사실 같아서 오히려 쉽게 잊힐 것 같은 기억하고 싶은 구절이나 혹은 사고의 전환점을 준 aha moments를 노트에 정리하다 보니 자연스럽게 내용별로 카테고리가 생성되었다. 작가의 의도는 책에서 저마다 다른 표현으로 무한 반복되었다는 것을 깨달았다.

마음가짐

- The single most poweful asset we all have is our mind. If it is trained well, it can create enormous wealth.

  By asking the question "How can I afford it?", your brain is put to work.

감정 다스리기

- People's lives are forever controlled by two emotions: fear and greed. Emotions control brain. Instead of admitting the truth about how they feel, they react to their feeling and fail to think. Just be an observer, not a reactor to your emotions. 
- The main cause of poverty or financial struggle is fear and ignorance, not the economy or the government or the rich. 
- Never forget that fear and desire can lead you into life's biggest trap if you're not aware of them controlling your thinking.
- Learn to use your emotions to think, not think with your emotions.
- Unchecked doubt and fear creates a cynic.

실패의 중요성

- Failure is part of the process of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success.
- Failure inspires winners. Failure defeats losers.

My aha-moments

- The poor and the middle class work for money. The rich have money work for them.
- Rich people acquire assets. The poor and middle class acquire liabilities that they think are assets.
- Financial struggle is often the result of people working all their lives for someone else. Business that do not require my presence I own them, but they are managed or run by other people. If I have to work there, it's not a business. It becomes my job.
- The key to becoming wealthy is the ability to convert earned income into passive income or portfolio income as quickly as possible. 

실천의 중요성

- The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
- I did exactly as the book said. Most people do not take action, or they let someone talk them out of whatever new formula they are studying.
- Action always beasts inaction.
- You must take action before you can receive the financial rewards. Act now!
